Help!!! Need suggestions for a "green" backup power generator

Hi All,

I'm looking to put together a low cost dual power source
generator using a solar panel and wind turbine.

I have found solar panels on ebay (approx $500-$600), charge
regulators, inverters and deep cells.

I am having trouble with the wind turbine, I am looking for
a 300W-500W small mobile unit. Something I can store away
in the garage until needed. I did manage to find some marine
units (very pricey).

Any ideas? or am I just nuts?

There are small units that are designed for RVs and the like. Sorry, no links right now.

there was some home built wind turbines using automotive alternators
that can produce around 400 to 500 watts very good for repairability
and spare parts and much cheaper than more efficient models.

Im building one now when i get it finished ill post a photo there was a link
through one of these gim posts to something similar

my dad built a water wheel on a creek at his gold mine, small enough that you could jump across it, and was able to run almost 1000w of appliances and lights from it... he didn't even have to build a dam...

I don't even know if this is a good idea or not.

I was also thinking of just using a wind generator
only (no solar) to cut costs.

Does anybody know of a decent DC - AC inverter?
There is a huge huge difference in pricing on them, and
I couldn't tell you a good one from a bad one.
